The Potential Problems with Gastric Bands

The use of gastric bands as a weight loss surgery can be a very rewarding thing for those that have tried just about anything else to lose the weight that they need. But, before venturing into the dangerous waters that come along with gastric bands, it is important to be educated. Though this surgery can be very promising and very rewarding, there are a certain number of risks that come along with it, even for those that are otherwise healthy. This is because this particular obesity surgery includes placing a foreign object into the body, which can result in many complications. So, before committing to it, any patient needs to know the facts about this weight loss surgery.

There is a possibility that a doctor will mal-position the band which can cause a kink in the stomach. This kink negates the use of the gastric band, allowing any amount of food into the stomach. This basically causes the gastric band to be useless in the body. However, there is no immediate way to know if it is not working, so it could be a matter of days, or even weeks before one realizes that there is a problem with the band.

There is also the possibility that the port and the connecting part of the band can flip over so that the membrane in the stomach may no longer be accessed with a needle from the outer part of the body. This can result in the band being not easily reachable for basic maintenance surgery. If this occurs, a corrective surgery may be necessary to make sure that no additional problems occur with the band.

These two problems, although relatively rare, are but a few of the many complications that may occur as a result of gastric band surgery. So, anyone considering this weight loss surgery should take them into account.
